Vibroacoustic Therapy

Vibroacoustic Therapy (VAT): A Gentle, Research‑Supported Way to Reset the Body

Vibroacoustic Therapy (VAT) is a therapeutic approach that uses low‑frequency sound waves to support the body’s natural ability to regulate, unwind, and restore balance. While many people have experienced the relaxing vibration of a music‑synced table, Pure VAT goes deeper, using specific frequencies designed to support particular concerns.

I completed my Vibroacoustic Therapist Certification to bring this work into my practice in a grounded, informed, and research‑supported way.

This therapy is based on the principle that the human body is constantly vibrating at various frequencies. The human body is composed of approximately 60-70% water, making water an essential component of our cells, tissues, and overall functioning. VAT leverages the body's high-water content to deliver low-frequency sound vibrations directly into the tissues. Since water is an excellent medium for transmitting sound waves, these vibrations travel efficiently through the body, influencing every cell they encounter. The rhythmic nature of these vibrations helps to restore order by resonating with the body's natural frequencies, effectively "reorganizing" areas of chaos. By applying specific sound frequencies, VAT works like tuning an instrument—it helps the body's systems synchronize and return to a more balanced and harmonious state, and aims to alleviate stress, enhance blood flow, and aid the healing process.

Vibroacoustic Therapy (VAT): Clinical Overview

How VAT works (research‑based)

VAT uses low‑frequency sinusoidal sound waves (typically 30–120 Hz) delivered through a mat or table. These frequencies stimulate mechanoreceptors in the skin, fascia, and deeper tissues, which then influence the autonomic nervous system.
This mechanism is described in the work of Punkanen & Ala‑Ruona (2012), who note that low‑frequency vibration can support parasympathetic activation and reduce sympathetic arousal.

Clinical findings from VAT research include:

  • Reduced muscle tension through rhythmic stimulation of muscle spindles

  • Improved emotional regulation via shifts in autonomic balance

  • Enhanced circulation and lymphatic flow due to mechanical vibration

  • Support for cognitive and neurological conditions, including dementia

  • Improved sleep quality and reduced stress markers

VAT + Fascia: Why it works so well

Fascia responds strongly to vibration because it is highly mechanosensitive and rich in fluid. Low‑frequency sound waves help fascia:

  • rehydrate

  • soften

  • regain glide

  • release long‑held tension patterns

Vibration travels efficiently through connective tissue, allowing it to reach deeper layers than manual pressure alone.

Pure VAT protocols

Pure VAT uses specific frequencies (not music‑synced vibration) to support particular concerns. Examples from your training include:

  • 40 Hz - cognitive support, dementia research

  • 52–60 Hz - muscle relaxation

  • 68–72 Hz - joint discomfort

  • 86 Hz - grounding + emotional regulation

  • 100–120 Hz - energizing + circulation support

  • Frequencies in the 80-90 Hz range are often used in protocols for anxiety, stress, and general nervous system support.
